2017 Awards event
Winners of the Scottish Top Employers for Working Families Awards 2017 were announced by Family Friendly Working Scotland in front of a 150 strong audience of business leaders on 9 March 2017, at a sparkling afternoon tea at the Lighthouse in Glasgow. Keynote speakers at the event were Jackie Kay, Scots Makar and Bob Keiller, Chairman of Scottish Enterprise. The 2017 Scottish Top Employers for Working Families awards were sponsored by Centrica, Maclay Murray and Spens LLP and Scottish Power.
Many of Scotland’s leading employers are embracing family friendly and flexible working and this was reflected in the high calibre of entries from large and small organisations across Scotland.
The awards celebrate progressive organisations that recognise that family friendly and flexible working brings benefits to employees, while also delivering high performance and successful businesses. Through family friendly working practices employers have found that they can achieve increased productivity and performance, reduced absenteeism, better morale and well-being, as well as improving staff retention and recruitment.
The Scottish Government is a core supporter of FFWS. Minister for Childcare and Early Years, Mark McDonald, said:
“I congratulate all the finalists of the Scottish Top Employers for Working Families Awards and I particularly commend the winners: it really is an accolade to be proud of. It is extremely positive to see so many of Scotland’s employers – both large and small – recognising the social and economic benefits of creating a family friendly workplace culture.
“The Scottish Government is committed to working with employers to promote and support family friendly and flexible working. Not only is it good for workers and families but it is also good for business and boosts productivity. The Scottish Government is proud to fund, and be active partners in, Family Friendly Working Scotland, who run these annual awards as part of a programme of work to support employers and their employees.”
Sarah Jackson OBE, CEO Working Families, who chaired The Scottish Top Employers for Working Families judging panel, said:
“The quality of entries was exceptional this year and it is apparent that organisations of all sizes and sectors across Scotland are wholeheartedly embracing family friendly flexible working. There is a clear understanding of the benefits this brings to business, family life, society and the economy.
“Finalists demonstrate success and impact as a result of implementing a family friendly approach and there was also a deep understanding of the link between flexibility and high performance.”
Nikki Slowey, Family Friendly Working Scotland Programme Director, said:
“The 2017 Awards have given great cause for celebration – we received triple the number of entries compared to last year, demonstrating the increased importance Scottish employers place on flexible and family friendly working. Family friendly working is good news for workers, families, business and our economy. And it is in our grasp to create the cultural change needed to reshape work in Scotland. These awards turn the spotlight on the very best of Scotland’s most family friendly employers.”

David Drysdale Memorial Award
The David Drysdale Memorial award was created by Fathers Network Scotland in memory of its late founder and CEO. It honours the company judged to have contributed most to creating a father-friendly workplace.
The inaugural award in 2017 went to the Independent Living Fund Scotland, a young and small organisation built from the ground up to support fathers with flexible conditions modelled by its leadership.
Hamish Watson, Scottish Power UK HR Director and Awards sponsor said : “Scottish Power are delighted to continue sponsoring the Family Friendly Working Scotland awards and would like to congratulate this year’s winners. These awards allow organisations to showcase their progressive approaches to supporting today’s modern working families, and also to collaborate on best practice and new developments and innovations”.
Samantha Pringle, General Manager of Fathers Network Scotland said: “We created the David Drysdale Memorial Award in tribute to our much-loved founder, to recognise an employer that supports its dads at all stages of fatherhood. David’s dad Dougal, was proud to be presenting the award to Independent Living Foundation Scotland. Though young and small, they have set high standards of care and support for their employees including their new dads. We were particularly impressed by the culture of flexible working modelled from the top by management, and above-statutory paternity leave. We know David would be delighted to see such progress in building the father-friendly world he embodied and campaigned for.”
